다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study examines the transformation of foreign land records in late Joseon Yeonhaengnok from ethnography into literary narratives. Analyzing the tales of Eopidalja(魚皮㺚子), Heukjinguk(黑眞國), and Bujeguk(浮提國) through ‘Othering’ and ‘Distance,’ it reveals how these records reflect the envoys’ internal desires.
First, the Eopidalja are defined as primitive Others via ‘physical distance.’ Joseon intellectuals established a civilizational boundary by reducing their identity to biological attributes, notably by assigning the surname ‘Eo(魚)’ to fix them as animalistic beings.
Second, the Heukjinguk narrative utilizes sea-severed ‘horizontal distance’ to project a ‘romantic Othering.’ By erasing barbaric traces, authors reconstructed this space into a classless Taoist utopia to compensate for reality’s deficiencies.
Third, Bujeguk functions as a political allegory through ‘vertical distance.’ The flying people symbolize a moral authority transcending earthly power, vicariously punishing corrupt Qing officials like Heshen(和珅).
In conclusion, these narratives are intricate literary strategies rather than mere curiosities. Joseon intellectuals utilized the spatiotemporal ‘gap’ created by distance to critique reality and express their socio-political desires.
