Today, Christianity and the Science of Myeongli are considered as two different universes that can not mingle, like water and oil. As a result, Christianity has become one of the major faiths widely recognized and practiced, whereas the Science of Myeongli exerts a very strong but informal influence.
If the two systems of belief cannot be reconciled, it’s because Christians disregard the Science of Myeongli as superstition or idle talk, without making any effort of grasping the profound philosophy behind it. As for the Myeongli practioners, they have not sought of bridging the gap either. Rather, they’ve contented themselves with fortune telling exercises and have not tried to communicate via academic studies. However, in daily life, we have to admit that we find ourselves between these two worlds, constantly hopping from one to the other. No one can deny the fact that both beliefs and philosophies have huge influence in our lives. In this study, we will look into the common features and differences of the two through comparative analysis, and try to determine whether they are compatible.
First, let’s compare how nature is considered in these two systems. For Christians, nature is first and foremost a creation of God. Besides, Christians do not hold an invariable, absolute position on nature but have been changing their views in the course of history following the major trends of the times. In particular, due to the establishment of modern society, there has been a great change in the natural view of Christianity. Until the Middle Ages, nature and human beings had different dimensions but had souls. However, after the establishment of modern society, human beings were separated from nature and objectified nature from a human-centered perspective.
In ancient China, the word “nature” literally meant an innate being, i.e., the existence or genesis of things was considered to happen from within and not from some external cause. Based upon this philosophy, the Science of Myeongli explains nature through the theory of Yin-Yang & Five Elements(陰陽五行), the theory of the Heaven, the earth, man and the three disasters(天地人三才論), and the sexagenary cycle calendar(干支曆法) that is the concrete expression of the two theories.
With the emergence of a new ecological approach to nature in Christianity since the second half of the 20th century, some passways have come to surface. This ecological interpretation contends that man and nature maintain an organic relationship, and it is exactly one of the established characteristics of the Oriental notion of nature.
In Christianity, man is a creature of God but forgets that he is created. He takes advantage of liberty God bestowed upon him to commit the ‘sin’ of leaving Him. However, he realizes he is a mere creature and longs for salvation by God. Still, man’s salvation is solely a matter of God’s decision. Only God chooses whom to save, and this is the Christian tenet of predestination.
The Confucianism focuses on the question whether man can achieve harmony with nature that is represented by the Heaven(天, Sky). In this early Confucianism, Confucius and Mencius considered man as intrinsically good, whereas Xunzi considered man as intrinsically bad. The Science of Myeongli takes the theory of the Heaven and adds its own understanding of man: the destiny of man and nature follows the same rules based on the principle of Yin-Yang & Five Elements(陰陽五行). By observing these rules, one should be able to predict the course of life, avoiding disaster and surfing on the favorable wave(避凶趨吉). Under this angle, Christianity, the Confucianism and the Science of Myeongli do not seem to share many common points.
The Christian approach to society is based on Jesus’s position. He called for social justice by loving first and the most the weak. However, Jesus’s ideology was reframed after his death, with the establishment of the church. Augustine, one of the fathers of the early Christianity, had a vision of society focused on the state, and devoted himself in defining the relationship between the church and the state. He demonstrated that the church and the state that represents society are bound to cooperate on some subjects and fall into conflicts on the others. Calvin, leader of the Protestant Reformation, had a more positive view of the state than that of Augustine. Under the Nazi regime, Bonhoeffer advocated secular Christianity, urging Christians to go out of the church into the world. He contended that the time has come for the church to cease to exist for its own sake and be there for man and the world.
The pre-Qin Confucianism emerged against the backdrop of the riotous Warring States Period of China(春秋戰國時代) and focused on building a stable society. Confucius opted for humaneness(仁), which, according to him, should be the underlying principle of family and society. He also founded the ideology of Jeongmyeong(正名), which encouraged each and every one to live up to his name, title, position, etc. Adherence to this principle would lead to a stable society. As for Mencius, he called for humanity and justice(仁義): education and discipline are of primordial importance as man is by nature good but tends to go astray. The sovereign should therefore rule with humanity and justice. This is the essence of the politics by the royal rules(王道政治) that Mencius advocated. He had revolutionary thoughts: if the sovereign abandons the rule by humanity and justice, the people have the right to change the king. For Xunzi, man has nothing to do with the Heaven. Man is bad by nature and does nothing but seeking his own interests. Man needs to make conscious efforts to change his nature to accomplish courtesy, and this is his ideology of Hwaseonggiwi(化性起僞).
The notion of society in the Science of Myeongli differs from the macroanalysis of Christianity or Confucianism: society starts from “I”, a concrete person trying to realize his desire. Relationship starts from one’s immediate family to expand to wider social ties. The Science of Myeongli approves the Chinese bureaucracy and seeks secular values such as financial achievement(財星) or success as civil servant(官星).
Both Christianity and Confucianism seek the common good under macroanalysis, whereas Confucianism and the Science of Myeongli share its pursuit of secular values. There are no noteworthy common points between the notion of society in Christianity and that in the Science of Myeongli.
As for the attitude toward destiny, predestination in Christianity and fatalism(運命論) of the Science of Myeongli do have some similarities. Both systems of thought believe that the human destiny is determined by external forces. In the Christian predestination theology, man’s salvation depends entirely on God’s will. Both the Old and New Testaments clearly assert that man’s salvation is God’s decision, which gave rise to Calvin’s predestination theology. Only the chosen ones cans be saved by God, and our faith itself is nothing but a response to God’s calling. The chosen ones come closer to God through sanctification and retribution, but those God didn’t choose becomes more and more evil and fail to reach salvation.
Confucianism also considers that man’s destiny is imposed by the Heaven. This fatalism is well expressed in the Book of Changes(周易), the Book of Documents(書經) and the Analects of Confucius(論語). By observing the sky, the ancient Chinese established the theory of Yin-Yang & Five Elements, and translated it into the sexagenary cycle calendar(干支曆法) in order to closely study human destiny. In a nut’s shell, the Science of Myeongli is an attempt to predict human destiny with the sexagenary cycle calendar.
Then, what brings together Christianity and the Science of Myeongli in a same frame? It is Providence, a Christian doctrine. Providence can be special or general. Special Providence represents God’s direct intervention. For example, the predestination belongs to Special Providence. On the other hand, the General Providence is a set of rules God delegated to the creatures when creating them. The theory of Ying-Yang and Five Elements can therefore be considered as General Providence. As this theory is the basis of the Science of Myeongli, the latter can be interpreted as the Christian General Providence.
The author of the present paper studied the possible coexistence of Christianity and the Science of Myeongli, believing that the latter has a great potential as a psychological counseiling tool. If it is not disregarded as something non-compatible with Christianity, it can be truly useful. The present study is an attempt to rehabilitate it.
