문화소 번역 방법 연구 -제주도 관광안내텍스트를 중심으로- = A Study of Cultural Elements in Korean-English Translation -With a focus on Jeju tourism texts-

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Translation is an act of cross-lingual and cross-cultural communication. It is a process that is looking for similarities between cultures, but it constantly confronts dissimilarities. How to deal with these dissimilarities to achieve intercultural communication has been a core issue in translation studies. Translators therefore should shift to be the cultural mediator. In the process of translation, translators are required to bridge the cultural gap between source and target text. This paper attempts to extend the theoretical focus on cultural elements(cultureme) which are researched in word level to context one, aiming to show translators various cultural translating methods in different levels. Thus it examines cultureme in Jeju tourism text and its translation which includes a number of cultural elements. The research result of this case study shows that culturemes are not limited to word level and they can be in idioms, grammar level and even context level. Therefore these results can have the real potential to expand horizons at researching culturemes.
