Ever since the Chosŏn government successfully requested and received posthumous titles from the Ming dynasty for King Seongjong’s biological parents, it continued to make similar requests to both the Ming and Qing dynasties for various posthumous Kings and Queen Consorts of Chosŏn. Consequently, one might easily assume that such requests during the late Chosŏn period toward the Qing dynasty were merely a continuation of Ming-era precedents. However, the requests for King Jinjong and Queen Consort Hyosun during King Jeongjo’s reign, as well as those for King Ikjong and Queen Consort Sinjeong during King Heonjong’s reign, clearly demonstrate that such a preconception is misplaced.
Immediately after his accession, King Jeongjo sought to posthumously elevate his adoptive parents to the status of King and Queen Consort. This followed the Gapsin Remedy(甲申處分, 1764), in which the previous monarch, King Yeongjo, had designated King Jeongjo as the son of Crown Prince Hyojang rather than Crown Prince Sado to justify the Imo Tragedy(壬午禍變, 1762), the execution of Crown Prince Sado. In this process, King Jeongjo also initiated measures to request posthumous titles from the Qing dynasty. Notably, past instances of Ming-authorized investitures were not cited as direct legal precedents in the official documents. Instead, Chosŏn government relied solely on the core argument that the deceased had been “a Crown Prince formally appointed by the Emperor during his lifetime” - a logic that had been decisive in the accumulation of such precedents. Based on years of tedious diplomatic disputes and negotiations with the Qing dynasty regarding investitures and posthumous titles, Chosŏn government sought to preemptively avoid potential issues that might arise if Ming-era precedents were presented and subsequently invalidated by the Qing dynasty. In fact, Qing court paid attention to only a fraction of the cases where Chosŏn government had previously received posthumous titles from the Ming and Qing dynasties, and even those were ultimately judged as invalid precedents during the final decision-making process.
This experience during King Jeongjo’s reign served as a primary reference when King Heonjong later sought to posthumously elevate his biological parents to King and Queen Consort shortly after his accession. However, due to factual differences between the subjects of posthumous elevation in King Heonjong’s era versus King Jeongjo’s, the case of King Heonjong shared significant commonalities not only with King Jeongjo’s case but also with the earlier case of King Seongjong. Although Chosŏn government could utilize both the precedents of King Seongjong and King Jeongjo, Chosŏn government drafted its documents by emphasizing the latter while omitting the former. This appears to be a calculated move, considering that when the Qing court previously handled the case of King Jeongjo-era, they not only prioritized the existence of Qing-era precedents but also dismissed the case of King Seongjong-era as invalid. The fact that the Qing court eventually granted approval - while perceiving this case as having aspects inconsistent with precedents, yet remaining conscious of the authority of Emperor Qianlong’s prior ratification - proves that Chosŏn government’s aforementioned strategic arrangements were indeed effective.
