국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 1988년 서울 올림픽 선수촌 아파트의 복층형 유닛에서 나타나는 깊은 발코니 혹은 마당에 대한 다층적 해석을 시도한다. 특히, 이를 단순히 전통 한옥 마당의 재현이라는 지역주의적 관점을 넘어서, 건축이론가 데이비드 레더배로우의 ‘작용’(performance) 개념을 바탕으로 실재 세계에서 해당 공간이 하는 기술적, 실천적, 상징적 역할에 대한 모색한다. 이에 따라, 마당 공간의 환경적, 일상적 의미를 분석하여 향후 공동주택 외부공간 계획을 위한 교훈을 도출한다.

This study examines the deep balcony integrated into the duplex units of the 1988 Olympic Athletes Village Apartments in Seoul. The spacewas originally conceived as a modern reinterpretation of madang, the traditional Korean courtyard, within a collective housing context.
Although often viewed as a symbolic reference to national or cultural identity, the courtyard reveals multiple layers of meaning shaped byenvironmental design, post-occupancy transformation, and spatial planning. To explore these dimensions, the study applies DavidLeatherbarrow’s concept of performance, which allows the madang to be understood not only as a representational idea but as an activespatial operation across technological, practical, and symbolic realms. By reconstructing its historical narrative through design competitionarchives, planning documents, media discourse, and resident practices, the analysis demonstrates how the courtyard mediates climaticorientation, everyday use, and cultural meaning. Rather than functioning as a static symbol of tradition, the deep madang within the duplexunit is reinterpreted as a performative spatial device that raises critical questions about the role of outdoor spaces in future collective housingdesign.
