The origin and historical development of musicals demonstrate that they have responded accordingly to the public’s tastes and industry’s demands as leaning too heavily toward popularity and commerciality may limit or decrease artistic value. The popularity of musicals comes from their entertaining and utopian characteristics such as providing pleasure and representing ideals. This study examines the entertaining nature and utopian representation in musicals. It also reveals a structural problem within that leads to limitations. Musicals include symbols that are easy to understand and common to the audience to be entertaining and popular. However, since these symbols reflect the real world, they initially lead the audience to a utopia but eventually bring them back to reality. To overcome this limitation, musicals should remain faithful to the represented fictional reality and explore a non-representational method through challenging the significance of representation. This study serves as a first step in enhancing the popularity and artistic value of musicals.
