The accelerating climate crisis and rapid electrification of transportation and grid infrastructure demand rechargeable batteries with higher energy density than state-of-the-art Li-ion systems. Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries are particularly attractive due to their high theoretical specific capacity (1675 mA h g⁻1), earth-abundant and low-cost sulfur, and the potential to surpass 500 W h kg⁻1 at the cell level. However, their practical deployment is still limited by sluggish polysulfide conversion kinetics, uncontrolled migration of soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPSs), and the formation of passivating Li2S layers, which together lead to poor rate capability, rapid capacity fading, and instability under realistic conditions such as high sulfur loading and lean electrolyte.
Catalyst-based strategies have emerged as a powerful approach to address these issues, yet there remains a fundamental gap in understanding how the spatial distribution and electronic structure of catalytic sites govern Li2S nucleation and LiPS conversion. This thesis aims to establish design principles that bridge atomic-scale catalyst descriptors with cell-level Li–S performance, focusing on (i) spatial engineering of catalytic domains on carbon hosts and (ii) electronic modulation of cobalt sulfide catalysts.
In Chapter 2, engineered carbon model systems based on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNT), oxidized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (OxCNTs), and graphene-quantum-dot-decorated CNT (CNT/GQD) composites are developed to systematically tune the spatial distribution of catalytic sites. By conducting ex-situ electrochemical analyses with morphological characterization of Li2S deposits, this chapter reveals how localized graphene-quantum-dot domains promote three-dimensional Li2S growth, suppress residual Li2S under high donor electrolytes, and enhance sulfur utilization under high-loading conditions.
In Chapter 3, CoS and CoS2 catalysts supported on a carbon paper (CP) interlayer are used as a model system to decouple the roles of polysulfide adsorptivity and electrical conductivity in Li–S batteries. By relocating CoSx from the sulfur cathode to a highly conductive CP framework, the cells preserve electronic transport while leveraging strong polar interactions with soluble polysulfides, which reduces polarization, sustains clear two-plateau discharge behavior, and improves sulfur utilization over a wide rate range. The comparative CoS/CoS2 study further reveals a conductivity–adsorptivity trade-off, where CoS lowers overpotential whereas CoS2 promotes higher sulfur utilization by enriching polysulfides near active sites and facilitating Li2S nucleation.
Collectively, this thesis provides a unified framework that links spatial and electronic design of catalytic sites to Li–S reaction pathways, offering generalizable guidelines for the development of high-energy, durable Li–S batteries.
