형상과 상징에 대한 개념은 건축가의 디자인 프로세스의 형식을 빌려 어떻게 명확하게 설명되어질 수 있을까? 상징과 건축적 표현 간의 관계는 캘리포니아 주 로스 엔젤레스에 있는 Our Lady of the Angels 성당을 위한 라파엘 모네오의 디자인을 통하여 이해될 수 있다. 여기에서 상징은 성당디자인의 구체적 설명과 형태의 전형이라고 이해되어진다. 이러한 디자인의 과정은 건축가 자신의 개인적 배경은 건축적 행위라는 현상적 사건으로서 분명해질 디자인 행위의 시간과 장소로부터 분리될 수 없다는 내용이 꽉 찬 이야기로서 맥락성을 약속하고 있다. 이러한 생각들은 형에 대한 관념을 동적인 방법으로의 변화와 추이를 통해 정체성의 지속차원에서 고려되어질 수 있는 것이다.

How can the notion of type and typology be elucidated in terms of an architect’s design process? The relationship between typology and architectural representation is particularly revealing in Rafael Moneo’s design for Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral in Los Angeles, California. Here, typology is understood to be paradigmatic from which the particular instantiation and form of the design for the cathedral takes hold. This process of design engages context as a thick narrative; the architect’s own personal background cannot be separated from the time and place of the design act that finally manifests as the phenomenal event that is the work of architecture. These considerations allow the notion of type to be considered in terms of the continuation of identity through process and change in a dynamic way.
