개념의 의미: 철학사적 고찰 = Meaning of Concept : a philosophy-historical research

In this paper the theme of research is how the term 'concept' is formed and how it is used by any means in the history of Western Philosophy. Use of the concept in the history of western philosophy is divided into an ancient, medieval, modern, and each period's important sense and employment is examined. It is revealed that the equivalent of 'concept' in the ancient philosophy of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle means the common essence of the individual things and the concept is an scientific expression, which has definition as the essence, in the theory of science and the logic of Aristotle. The relationship of the concepts and language began to discuss in the logic of Aristotle and the medieval Ockahm's logic took over this discussion. Ockahm showed the distinction of concepts and words, which is a linguistic expression as well as the relationship of the concepts and language, distinguishing between terminus conceptus, terminus scriptus and terminus prolatus. According to him the concept is a mental sign. While language is secondary and conventional, concept is a mental sign, which signify naturally and primarily a mental image. Also in the understanding of Locke about the concept the Occam's influence was remarkable. Locke used the concept is something like 'idea in mind' and so concept was hard to distinguish with idea. After Kant distinguished intuitive idea and concept from the reason of the generality of concept. After modern increased the linguistic point of view in the formation of concept and the concept is solidified it's place in the topics of the logic by Mill, Bolzano and Frege.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 서양 철학사에서 ‘개념’이라는 용어가 어떻게 형성되고 어떤 의미로 사용되었는지 고찰한다. 서양 철학사에서 개념의 사용을 알아보기 위해 고대, 중세, 근대로 구분해 각 시기의 중요한 의미와 용법을 검토한다. 고대에서는 소크라테스와 플라톤, 아리스토텔레스의 철학을 중심으로 개념의 등가물에 해당하는 것이 ‘개별 사물의 공통 본질’을 의미한다는 것, 그리고 아리스토텔레스의 학문이론과 논리학에서 개념이 정의를 본질로 하는 학술적 표현이라는 것이 드러난다. 개념과 언어와 관계가 논의되기 시작한 것은 아리스토텔레스의 논리학에서부터이고 중세 오캄의 논리학으로 이어진다. 오캄은 개념 명사와 글말 명사, 입말 명사의 구별을 통해서 아리스토텔레스의 논리이론을 진척시켰고, 여기서 개념은 언어적 표현인 단어와 구별된다는 것뿐만 아니라 개념이 언어와 어떻게 관계되는지도 나타난다. 오캄의 견해에 따르면 개념은 일종의 정신적 기호이다. 언어가 이차적이고 관습적인 반면, 개념은 자연적으로, 일차적으로 정신적 상을 표기하는 기호이다. 근대에 로크의 개념에 대한 이해에서도 오캄의 영향은 두드러진다. 로크는 개념을 정신에 있는 관념과 같은 것으로 사용했고 따라서 개념과 관념은 구별하기 어려워졌다. 이후 칸트는 개념의 일반성을 이유로 직관적 관념과 개념을 구분한다. 근대 이후 개념 사용의 특징은 개념 형성에서 언어적 관점이 증가했다는 것이고, 개념이 밀, 볼차노, 프레게에 의해서 논리학의 주제로 자리가 굳어졌다는 것이다.
