문화자본론의 관점에서 본 영어의 한국적 의미와 구조

국문 초록 (Abstract)

??본 연구는 부르디외의 문화 재생산론에 근거하여 대표적인 문화자본으로 전제되어 온 문화예술와의 비교적 관점에서 영어가 차지하는 위상과 내적 구조를 탐색함으로써, 한국사회에서 영어가 지니는 문화자본론적 함의와 실제 다각적으로 작동하고 있는 계급재생산 기제들의 지형에 대한 경험적인 설명을 제공하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 서울, 경기, 인천에 거주하는 성인남녀 705명을 대상으로 문화예술과 영어에 대한 인식과 태도, 문화예술적 교양과 영어 능력이 뛰어난 사람들의 이미지 등을 조사해 분석에 활용하였다. 연구 결과, 중요도에 있어서 영어가 문화예술보다 더 높이 평가되었고 계급이 높을수록 중요성을 강조하는 양상도 영어에서 더 명확히 나타났다. 높은 계급일수록 투자 의향 또한 커지는 문화예술 영역에 비해, 영어에 대한 계급의 효과는 미비했다. 실제 자신의 능력에 대한 평가는 계급이 높아질수록 확연히 비례해 높아졌다. 영어를 잘하는 사람들의 이미지를 보면 그 구성 요인들이 문화예술적 교양을 가진 사람들의 그것과 거의 유사했다. 특히 국내 교육만으로 뛰어난 영어 실력을 가지고 있는 사람들의 이미지는 문화예술 관련 교양을 지닌 사람들의 이미지와 완전히 일치하는 구조를 띠었다. 또한 문화예술적 교양과 마찬가지로 영어 실력도 그 소유자 개인의 능력이나 고급스러움, 성공의 이미지로 비추어지는 경향이 강했다. 각 요인별 평균 점수의 계급별 차이는 두드러지지 않았다. 전반적으로 영어와 영어 능력이 뛰어난 사람들에 대한 응답자들의 인식은 문화예술을 준거로 했을 때 영어가 한국사회에서 중요한 문화자본으로 이해되어야 한다는 사실을 확인케 하는 동시에, 응답자의 계급적 배경이 보다 체계적으로 반영되어 나타난 문화예술에 비해 영어의 경우 부분적으로 계급별 인식이 혼재되어 있는 ‘과도기’적 과정을 거치고 있음을 시사한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study explores the status and inner structure of English compared with cultural art which has been considered to be a representative cultural capital according to Bourdieu’s cultural reproduction theory. Through this study, an empirical explanation toward the implication and the feature of class-reproduction mechanism of English in the Korean society is delivered. For such explanation, investigation on 705 people residing in Seoul, Kyeongki and Incheon region has been done toward the awareness, attitudes and images on people with high cultural art refinement and English skill. As a result, English has been evaluated to be more important than cultural art. Moreover, higher the class, the importance of English has been clearly defined. Also, higher the class, the intention toward cultural art was higher. However, the class-effectiveness was inadequate for English. Evaluation toward one’s actual ability was definitely proportionally higher as the class was higher. Also, the image components of people with high English skill reflected the components of people with high knowledge in cultural art. Expecially, images of people with high English skills from domestic education coincided with the images of people with high cultural art knowledge. Like cultural art refinement, English ability also reflected a person’s exclusivity and successive image. The average scores of each factors did not have class deferences. The overall awareness toward English and people with high English skill complied with cultural art, it has been found that English skill should be understood as cultural capital in the Korean society. Moreover, English can be implied to be in a transformation period with mixed class awareness when compared with cultural art which systematically reflected the respondents’ class backgrounds.
