Amid the growing emphasis on sustainable development, green consumption has become a key topic in brand strategy and consumer research. While online channels such as social media and official websites continue to evolve, the consistency of sustainable messages across these platforms critically shapes consumers’ perceptions and purchase intentions. Yet, prior studies have mainly focused on brand image or communication strategies, overlooking how online message consistency affects green purchase intention via sustainability perception. In addition, the moderating role of brand trust remains insufficiently explored.
This study systematically investigates the mechanism through which consistent sustainable information across online channels influences green purchase intention via sustainability perception. It aims to uncover the relational pathway between communication consistency and consumer psychology, thereby bridging the research gap in the logical linkage between message consistency and green purchase intention.
This study examines three questions:
(1) whether information consistency across online channels enhances consumers’ sustainability value perception; (2) whether this perception mediates the effect of consistency on green purchase intention; and (3) whether luxury brand trust moderates this mediating process.
Grounded in TPB and integrating the Brand Experience Framework with a multidimensional sustainability perception construct, the study proposes the pathway “online information consistency→sustainability perception→green purchase intention,” including a moderated mediation model with brand trust. Using a quantitative design, 536 survey responses were analyzed through SPSS 26.0, RSA, and PROCESS to test polynomial regression and mediation–moderation effects. The results validate the proposed pathway and lead to the following conclusions:(1) Information consistency across online channels significantly enhances consumers’ sustainability perception in terms of functional, emotional, and social value. A consistent brand message strengthens consumers’ understanding and trust in the brand’s environmental attributes.(2) Under conditions of high consistency ('high-high' combinations), consumers demonstrate stronger sustainability perception due to an additive intensity effect. In contrast, low-consistency scenarios fail to significantly enhance consumer perception, indicating low tolerance for conflicting information and underscoring the critical role of message consistency in shaping green consumption.(3) Sustainability perceptions—across all three value dimensions—positively and significantly influence green purchase intention and act as mediators between information consistency and behavioral intention. This validates and extends the applicability of the "attitude–intention" pathway within sustainable communication contexts.
(4) Trust in luxury brands significantly amplifies the impact of message consistency on sustainability perception and, subsequently, on green purchase intention. The psychological conversion mechanism of brand communication is more effective under high-trust conditions.
Theoretical contributions of this study include the incorporation of a three-dimensional sustainability perception framework into the TPB, enriching the construct of attitude and extending its applicability in predicting green consumption behavior. By integrating the Brand Experience Framework and information consistency theory, the study constructs a mediating chain of 'online consistency→sustainability perception→purchase intention,' thereby elucidating the role of perceptual mechanisms in shaping behavioral intentions. The inclusion of luxury brand trust as a moderating variable further contributes to sustainable communication theory by providing an integrative perspective combining mediation and moderation.
Practically, this study offers empirical evidence for luxury brands implementing sustainable communication strategies across multiple online channels. It highlights the essential role of information and experiential consistency in enhancing consumers' sustainability perception and behavioral intention. Strategic recommendations are proposed for aligning communication content, reinforcing brand trust, and encouraging consumer engagement. In light of the growing need for sustainable transformation, this study provides actionable theoretical insights and practical pathways for luxury brands to build credible sustainable images, increase consumer loyalty, and enhance brand equity.
