    The purpose of the study was to investigate walking ability and balance ability of the elderly to examine effects, when the elderly moved lumbo-pelvic region as well as lower limbs muscle and when they moved lower limbs muscle only. The object was sixteen old people to consist of two groups, in other words, the one group was eight of old people who moved lumbo-pelvic region and lower limbs, while the other group was eight who moved lower limbs only: The former group performed not only six kinds of exercises of lumbo-pelvic region muscle but also ten kinds of exercises of lower limbs muscle, while the latter group did ten kinds of exercises of lower limbs muscle: The elderly did two sets of ten elastic resistance exercises two times a week for eight weeks. The study investigated walking ability as well as balance ability before and after the exercise. The findings were as follows: After the exercise, left-hand static balance of the group who moved lumbo-pelvic region as well as lower limbs muscle increased significantly (p<.01). The ability of lower limbs training group also increased significantly (p<.001). After the exercise, right-hand balance ability of the group who moved lumbo-pelvic region as well as lower limbs muscle increased significantly (p<.05), and the ability of the group who moved lower limbs also increased significantly (p<.05). After the exercise, Timed Up & Go test was conducted: The ability of the group who moved lumbo-pelvic region as well as lower limbs muscle decreased significantly (p<.001) and that of lower limbs training group also decreased significantly (p<.01). After the exercise, Tandem gait test was conducted: The ability of the group who moved lumbo-pelvic region as well as lower limbs muscle decreased significantly (p<.01) and that of lower limbs training group also decreased significantly (p<.01). After the exercise, step length in average of the group who moved lumbo-pelvic region as well as lower limbs muscle increased significantly (p<.05), and that of lower limbs training group also increased significantly (p<.05). After the exercise, cadence of the group who moved lumbo-pelvic region as well as lower limbs muscle increased significantly (p<.001), and that of lower limbs training group also increased significantly (p<.05). After the exercise, walking speed of the group who moved lumbo-pelvic region as well as lower limbs muscle increased significantly (p<.001), and that of lower limbs training group also increased significantly (p<.05). In conclusion, after elastic resistance exercise, both groups improved not only walking ability such as step length in average, cadence and walking speed, etc but also balance ability such as static balance and dynamic balance, so that reinforced lower limbs muscle could improve walking ability as well as balance ability of the elderly to prevent hurt from a fall. However, elastic resistance exercise of lumbo-pelvic region muscle did not have influence upon walking ability as well as balance ability of the elderly.
