Purpose: The current study was conducted to evaluate the learning styles of Medical School Students of Kyungpook National University compared to those of other schools. This study was intended to help implement the most desirable medical-education method.
Methods: 242 students participated in an online and/or offline questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of 49 items based on the Felder's 5 different learning styles; that is, sensing-intuitive, visual-verbal, inductive-deductive, active-reflective and sequential-global. In the case of the senior students, 30 students were classified into 2 groups; 15 in the higher percentage rank and 15 in the lower percentage rank based on their freshman and sophomore year grades. Then the learning styles of two groups were compared.
Results: The learning styles of Medical School Students of Kyungpook National University were similar in each grade; that is, sensing, visual, inductive, reflective and global in style. In the case of the senior students, the higher percentage rank group showed reflective style and the lower percentage rank group showed active style in active-reflective measures. In sequential-global measures, the higher percentage rank group were sequential and the lower percentage rank group were global. The learning styles of our students showed similar results with those of 'P' College of Science and Technology. When comparing learning styles with American students, they were active and sequential while ours were reflective and global.
Conclusion: Our students preferred sensing, visual, inductive, reflective and global learning. Considering these results, the provider of medical education are required to understand various learning styles to proceed with effective class and lead learners with more suitable methods.
