관광지 안내판의 교육적 활용: ‘전주사고’를 중심으로 = The Educational Use of English Information Boards: Focused on Jeonju Sago Historical Archive

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

There is a historical archive named Jeonju Sago in the Gyeonggijeon sanctum area. It has its information board written in Korean and English. As there is a course titled Translation Theory and Practice in my university, I let the students of my class check the errors in the information board.
The students were advised to categorize the errors into three sections: ellipsis or omission, addition and grammar. The procedure was as follows: First, each student writes down all the errors as he or she can find. Second, the students make groups of four or five and compare their checklists and discuss what's wrong and why they are wrong. Third, each group makes a substitute translation. Fourth, a representative gathers the result of the group discussion and fixes errors and a substitute translation.
The errors seemed to be made by the translator's inability, lack of patriotism and sense of duty. The students learned how important the translation in the English information boards was. In addition to the translation practice, they came to realize the responsibility of the translator.
