This study aims to help Chinese learners understand Korean culture which is
the background of figurative expressions, accurately understand the meaning of
figurative expressions and use them naturally in communication. There is a
profound aspect to the point that metaphors and symbols are the essence of
culture. A metaphor is to compare an object you are trying to say using
another object. Meanwhile, we live in the world with countless symbols. The
language, movements, and artistic acts we use all appear as symbols. Plants
have a close relationship with people's daily lives. This study aims to focus on
figurative expressions using plant vocabulary and study them in terms of
symbols, cultural implications, and the use of language in relation to plants.
Chapter 1 mainly presents the purpose and necessity of the study, the
expression of metaphors, the current status of prior research on plants in Korea
and China, and the method and composition of this study.
Chapter 2 described the concepts and types of figurative expressions of Korea
and China and examined the basic concepts of symbols.
Chapter 3, the main part of this research, intended to conduct a study on the
symbolic meaning of figurative expressions using plant vocabulary in Korea and
China. We will also examine the meanings of plant vocabulary symbols from
both countries and present their commonalities and differences.
Chapter 4 conducted a survey of 75 Chinese elementary, middle and
high-class level learners on how much they understand the symbolic meanings- 98 -
of Korean plant vocabulary, and based on these analyses, we looked at ways to
use plant symbolic vocabulary as educational materials. The survey suggested to
learners that these studies could be used as supporting materials for reading
classes. Furthermore, it could also be used as a language and culture study
textbook.
Finally, Chapter 5 summarized the study above, explained its limitations, and
described its significance.
This study aims to help Chinese learners understand Korean culture which is
the background of figurative expression, understand the meaning of figurative
expression and use it naturally in communications. In addition, it is expected
that the research on the metaphor and symbolism of plant vocabulary will
organize the symbolic education items in the figurative education stage and used
as basic materials for teaching figurative expressions in the Korean language
education fiel
