재생산 기술과 여성의 시민권

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 생명공학 분야의 전문적 지식·기술의 사회적 영향력이 증대하는 현실을 인간의 재생산에 초점을 맞춰 검토해 보고자 한다. 생명공학은 질병의 치료를 목적으로 한 유전자 조작 및 배아 복제 시도와 재생산 과정에의 개입 두 가지로 대별되지만 기술적 차원에서 양자를 구별하는 것은 별 의미가 없다. 양자 모두 난자와 배아를 다루는 조작과 개입을 필수적이고도 핵심적인 절차로 삼고 있기 때문이다. 현재 재생산 기술은 배란, 수정, 착상, 분만 등의 과정이 한 여성의 몸에서 연속적으로 일어나는 과정일 필요가 없도록 만들었다. 난자 공여, 배아 공여, 대리모 등의 선택이 가능해진 것이다. 또한 이로써 여성이 남성과 성적으로 결합하여 임신·출산하는 것을 전제로 한 모성 개념이 더 이상 당연한 것이 아니게 되었다. 이러한 기술의 활용은 여성을 그 직접적 대상으로 하며 그 영향에 있어서도 여성의 생물학적·사회적 현실을 뒤흔들 잠재력을 지니고 있다. 이에 주목하여 본 연구는 현 재생산 기술의 특징을 살펴보고 이것이 여성에게 미치는 영향을 여성의 시민권, 특히 재생산 권리와 재생산 건강의 측면에서 평가해보고자 한다. 결론적으로 본 연구는 이 기술의 활용에서 여성의 욕구와 건강이 일차적인 고려사항이 될 필요가 있다고 주장한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Considering the growing influence of biotechnology, this study is to critically review its implication in relation to human reproduction. Biotechnology is applied for two important medical areas: one is disease treatment, and the other is reproduction. As the core technology of these two applications involves with dealing with oval and embryo, biotechnology can be understood as reproductive technology. Reproductive technologies have developed rapidly; there is a wide selection of available reproductive options such as egg donation, embryo donation, or surrogacy. It means that the present reproductive technologies result in the fragmentation of natural and unified reproduction. In other words, the motherhood from the genetic contribution to the birthing process is being transformed by technological progress. These changes will potentially have impact on both biological and social condition of women. The aim of this article is to examine the influence of these reproductive technologies on women who are the very objective of the intervention of those technologies from the perspective of women’s citizenship, especially reproductive rights and health. This article suggests that women’s needs and health should be primary concern for developing and using reproductive technologies.
