스뚜빠의 변화된 모습에서 보인 생명성

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 불교도들에게 신앙의 매개 역할을 하는 스뚜빠라는 건축물이 사회, 문화, 그리고 역사를 통해 이어가는 그 끈질긴 생명성을 조명하고자 한다. 스뚜빠(st?pa)는 일반적으로 사리탑을 의미한다. 붓다 열반 후에 그의 유체를 다비한 후에 안치된 장소이자 건축물로 널리 알려졌다. 스뚜빠의 변환된 이미지의 함의 체계를 장중미, 모성적 이미지 그리고 보편화된 모습으로 재단해서 사그라진 잿더미에서 다시 피어 오른 생명력을 불교도의 입장에서 서술해보고자 한다. 스뚜빠의 역사성을 언급하지 않고는 그 변화된 모습을 표현하기 어렵고 그 끈질긴 생명력조차 거론되기 힘들다. 스뚜빠는 고대에서 시작되어 현재 우리 옆에 있다. 스뚜빠를 도상학적 의미에서 외부로부터 부여되는 공양과 숭배의 이미지, 그리고 공양과 숭배의 역사성으로 인하여 보편화되어가는 과정을 살펴본다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper aims to highlight the tenacious vitality of buildings ca lied st?pas, which function as a medium of faith to Buddhists, in the way they continue through society, culture, and history. A st?pa usually refers to a pagoda that preserves relies of the Buddha. The buildings are weil known as places in which the body of Buddha was enshrined after his death and cremation. The goal of the paper is to describe from the point of view of Buddhism the vitality that took the system implied in the changed image of st?pa, reformed it into a beauliful, majestic, and maternal image, into something universal, and became rekindled from the dying ashes. It is difficult to express the changed forms of the St?pa or even talk about its tenacious vitality without first discussing its historicity. Stupa began from ancient limes and it is still with us today. The image of food offering and worshipping externally bestowed on St?pa in the iconographic sense, and the process of its universalization due to the historicity of food offering and worshipping will be examined.
