Traditional ink painting is one of China's representative traditional cultural arts, and due to its unique aesthetic characteristics, it is an artistic motif frequently borrowed by famous brands and fashion designers not only in China but also abroad. In particular, many fashion brands today express their own artistry by combining various expression techniques of Chinese traditional ink paintings with their own fashion designs and giving them new visual effects. In this context, this researcher intends to examine the case of traditional Chinese ink design in modern fashion design and conduct an analysis on it. Looking at previous studies on Chinese traditional ink, there are no prior studies on and developed Chinese traditional ink in the fashion field, and other studies on fashion design in terms of expression techniques, characteristics, pattern formation, composition, and color of Chinese traditional ink are insufficient. Therefore, this study aims to examine how traditional ink was used and developed in modern fashion design, focusing on the examples of traditional ink in modern fashion collections, and to find out the expressive characteristics of traditional ink applied to seasonal designs in New York, Milan, Paris, and China. To this end, first, in order to find out the concept, culture, and characteristics of traditional Chinese ink painting, the theoretical background was examined through literature related to Chinese ink painting and previous studies. Next, the Vogue Internet site in China and www.baidu.com, China's largest image search site, collected and summarized traditional Chinese ink design cases within 19 seasons between the last seven years (2015 S/S to 2021 S/S) in New York, Milan, Paris and Shanghai Fashion Collection. Among the fashion collections announced during the period, a total of 17 brands that appear to be examples using traditional Chinese ink paintings were first extracted, and a total of 347 costumes were classified and analyzed. In other words, the study was conducted by selecting representative brands by season among the New York, Milan, Paris, and Shanghai collections and analyzing the traditional Chinese ink design cases that appeared in the design. Finally, based on the above analysis, the expressive characteristics of traditional Chinese ink design appearing in the fashion collection were examined in detail.
Through the above process, it was confirmed that modern fashion design combining traditional Chinese art and costumes creates creative aesthetic value and has a new influence.
It is hoped that this study will serve as the basis for the fusion of traditional Chinese ink and fashion design.
