This study examines how social connection-based news use is related to political participation and political knowledge in the digital news environment, focusing on the mediating paths of comment participation behavior and traditional media news use. Today, news is circulated not only through news organizations or portals, but also through various social pathways such as social media, mobile messengers, sharing and recommendations by friends and acquaintances, and connections with news posters. Even when the news content is the same, users may interpret and respond to it differently depending on whether they encounter it through algorithmic recommendation or through social connections. Based on this perspective, this study conceptualizes social connection-based news use as a news access route distinct from general social media news exposure. The analysis used survey data collected for this study, with a final valid sample of 1,450 respondents after excluding careless responses. The main variables were social connection-based news use, comment participation behavior, traditional media news use, political participation, and political knowledge. Social connection-based news use included news access through sharing or recommend ations by friends and acquaintances, following news posters, or adding them as friends. Comment participation behavior was measured by news comment writing, reactions to comments, comment sharing, and the writing, reaction, and sharing of information-providing comments. Traditional media news use referred to the use of news provided by major newspapers and broadcasting companies. Political participation was measured as behavioral participation, including political donations, offline petitions, membership in political parties or political organizations, political boycotts, and participation in street demonstrations or rallies. Political knowledge was measured as the total number of correct answers to objective questions on political institutions, parties and politicians, electoral systems, and major political and social issues. Reliability analysis, exploratory factor analysis, descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis, and bootstrapping-based mediation analysis were conducted. The findings are as follows. First, social connection-based news use was positively related to both comment participation behavior and traditional media news use. Thissuggests that users who more frequently encounter news through social connections are more likely to engage in comment writing, reacting to comments, and sharing comments, and are also more likely to use news from major newspapers and broadcasting companies. Second, comment participation behavior was positively related to both political participation and political knowledge. The relationship with political participation was relatively clear, indicating that comment participation behavior may be associated with the process through which news users move toward public issue engagement and behavioral participation. Third, traditional media news use was also positively related to both political participation and political knowledge. Its relationship with political participation was weaker than that of comment participation behavior, while its relationship with political knowledge indicated the relevance of structured information provided by major news-producing institutions. Fourth, the mediation analysis showed that social connection-based news use was related to political participation and political knowledge through comment participation behavior, and also through traditional media news use. These findings show that the relationship between digital news use and political outcomes cannot be explained solely by the amount or frequency of news exposure. News encountered through social connections may be relatedto political participation and political knowledge through interactive responses such as comment participation behavior, and may also be linked to these outcomes through traditional media news use. Therefore, understanding political participation and political knowledge in the digital news environment requires attention to the routes through which news reaches users, how users respond to news, and how additional news use takes place. By treating social connection-based news use as an independent analytical focus and examining the paths of comment participation behavior and traditional media news use, this study provides empirical evidence for research on digital news use.
