      ABSTRACT
      The investigation of benthic fauna in the river receiving the effluent of sewage
      treatment plant was conducted in order to evaluate the impact of the effluent against
      the river ecosystem. The benthic fauna was significantly influenced by the effluent of
      sewage treatment plant. The effluent of sewage treatment plant brought the decrease in
      species of benthic animals so that the diversity of benthic fauna in the natural river. On
      the other hand, the biomass of benthic animals increased near the outfall of sewage
      effluent, and chironomidae (R-type) was predominant.
      The result obtained from investigation showed that the benthic fauna could be used as
      an effective index in evaluating the impact of sewage effluent from the ecological
      viewpoint.
