The needs for the installation of artificial reefs are rapidly increasing due to the change of fishery policies in Korea. Little follow-up after the setting of artificial reefs, however, had been performed and no studies were conducted to investigate the effects of releasing material from concrete-made reefs. In this study, analytical comparison for the releasing material from laboratory-scale stoney-pellet and concrete reefs was made. The sea water pH and temperature at concrete reef tank kept higher than those from stoney-pellet ones by 1.2 to 1.5 due to the continual release of Ca^2+, and by 1.0 to 3.0 oC due to hydrolysis. The release of harmful inorganic materials and heavy metals from both artificial reefs were negligible. Based on the analytical results, possible changes of ecosystem around the reefs were predicted and proposals were made for the effective management of the artificial reefs.
