Background : Worldwide, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) causes about 1.5 hundred million illnesses a year, and the prevalence and incidence are high in both males and females. Nowadays, the epidemiology and characteristics of STIs are changing, but there is no updated, evidencebased guideline for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of STIs in Korea.
Aim of study /purpose : To develop evidence-based and standardized guidelines for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of STIs in Korea.
Method
1. We chose 9 major STIs for establishing Korean STI guidelines.
2. We conducted the survey for practical behavior of medical doctors for STIs.
3. We established the standardized guidelines refer to the extensive literature.
4. We used the evidence-based and core-question methods for analysis of the literatures.
Results and Discussion
ㆍ We developed evidence-based and standardized guidelines for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of STIs that is appropriate for the medical environment in Korea.
ㆍ We noticed the gap between practical condition and academic guidelines.
ㆍ Additional research for implementation of the guidelines is necessary. Background : Worldwide, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) causes about 1.5 hundred million illnesses a year, and the prevalence and incidence are high in both males and females. Recently, the STIs of an aging population came to the fore because of the soaring population of older people. But the basic data for policy making through the scope and variation of STI has been absent in Korea.
Aim of study /purpose
1. To investigate the prevalence of STIs (Syphilis, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia) in general people over the age of 60.
2. To evaluate sexual behavior of the older people with survey.
3. Comparative analysis of the data between this surveillance study and the other existing similar reports about the STIs in older people in Korea.
4. Suggestions for conducting to proper surveillance system for STIs in older people.
Method
1. We surveyed the prevalence the STIs (Syphilis, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia) with patients over the age of 60 who visited to health center for regular checkups.
2. We conducted the survey for sexual behavior of older people and analyzed the data from National Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service.
3. We calculated the final prevalence rate with complementary method between the community-based data and the national statistical data.
4. With analyzing the collected data, we arranged the characteristics in sexual behavior of older people and compared these results with foreign data and made suggestion for conducting to proper surveillance system for STIs in older people..
Results and Discussion :The finals prevalence rates of STIs in older people are 0.22% (Syphilis), 0.01% (Gonorrhea), 2.37% (Chlamydia) respectively. With these basic epidemiological data, the effective surveillance system for lower prevalence and incidence of STIs in older people ought to be established.
