편의점 소재 소설의 (비)장소성 = The (Non-)Placeness of the Convenience Store in Contemporary Novel

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 편의점을 소재로 삼은 소설을 텍스트로 삼아, 비장소성이 구현되는 양상과동시에 이를 은밀히 전복하는 양상 곧 편의점에서 이질적인 성격들이 중첩되고 충돌하는 양상을 살핀다. 텍스트들에서 편의점은 탈역사성, 무관계성, 신속한 이동 등을 핵심속성으로 하는 비장소성의 공간이다. 비장소성은 편의점이라는 공간을 장악하여 그 공간 내 인물들의 관계와 행위양식을 선험적으로 규제하며, 등장인물이나 작가 또한 편의점의 비장소성을 적극적으로 요구하거나 비관적으로 인정하고 심지어 소설 구조적으로수용하고 있다. 동시에 텍스트들은 편의점에 유토피아적 성격을 투사함으로써 편의점을헤테로토피아로 재편하기도 한다. ｢공항철도 편의점｣이 비장소성의 절대적 우위 속에서헤테로토피아성의 최소치를 제시한다면, ｢나는 편의점에 간다｣는 비장소성에 대한 의존아래에서 상상적 일탈을 요구한다. 불편한 편의점･불편한 편의점 2는 비동시적인것의 동시화를 통해 ｢나는 편의점에 간다｣의 상상적 일탈을 구현한다. 그러나 불편한편의점･불편한 편의점 2가 제공하는 헤테로토피아는, 편의점이 대체해버린 과거 구멍가게의 공동체성･실명성을 편의점에 투사함으로써 역설적으로 현재 편의점의 비장소성을 도덕적으로도 완벽한 것으로 낭만화 하는 결과를 낳는다. 편의점을 선험적으로 지배하는 비장소성과 주체에 의해 각인된 헤테로토피아성은 서로를 완벽히 장악하지 못하기에 텍스트들은 한시적이고 불안정한 균열적 배치를 노정한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper examines novels featuring convenience stores to explore how non-placeness is manifested and, simultaneously, covertly subverted － specifically, how heterogeneous characteristics overlap and clash within these spaces. In these texts, the convenience store serves as a space of non-placeness, characterized by core attributes such as ahistoricity, a lack of relationships, and rapid transit. Non-placeness dominates the convenience store, regulating the relationships and behavioral patterns of characters a priori.
Simultaneously, the texts reorganize the convenience store into a heterotopia by projecting utopian characteristics onto it. While Airport Railroad Convenience Store presents a minimum degree of heterotopia amidst the absolute dominance of non-placeness, I Go to the Convenience Store demands an imaginary deviation while remaining dependent on non-placeness. Inconvenient Convenience Store and Inconvenient Convenience Store 2 realize the imaginary deviation found in I Go to the Convenience Store through the synchronization of the non- synchronous.
However, the heterotopia offered by the Inconvenient Convenience Store series projects the community spirit and identity-based familiarity of the traditional corner stores － which convenience stores have replaced － back onto the convenience store itself. Paradoxically, this results in romanticizing the current non-placeness of the convenience store as something morally perfect.
Because the non-placeness that a priori governs the convenience store and the heterotopia inscribed by the subject cannot completely dominate one another, these texts expose a temporary and unstable, fractured configuration.
