한국철학 : 퇴계 정신의 21세기적 메시지 = Korean Philosophy : Toegye`s Spirit in the 21st Century

How much the topic about individual`s inner reflection and self-examination in 21st century can attract the public is unknown. However we had an enough experience of the fact that material prosperity and convenience of science technology can`t guarantee human`s happiness. Meeting a philosopher, Toegye, who groped after a serious life intensely keeping a tension relationship with an inner world of human in his lifetime, means more than just simply looking for a lure of classic even in 21st century. Even though finding an intellectual is not so difficult, finding an intellectual who has a practical mind is difficult. Toegye whose life can give a message of hope in 21st century is a welcomed figure in that he is the man of deeds. Love of home life, being a man with modesty and seriousness, endless efforts for self-improvement, model life as a man in the higher classes, beautiful old age, cultural exchange with Japan with loyalty, and ending life with a pious attitude that Toegye put in a practice becomes a good model of life. Even when Toegye faced a death, he remained with pure and passionate spirit. We saw Toegye`s whole life through Toegye`s everyday life and were able to find out that he always carried out passionate life with a passionate sprit. This part can be a great lesson to us who live in 21st century as well as his studies. If I had a choice to tell Toegye`s message of sprit in 21st century, I would say that it is Toegye`s passionate spirit.
