신라 철제농구의 변천과 확산 = The Changing Nature and Spread of Silla Iron Farming Tools

This study sets out to clearly trace the changes evident in the iron farming tools of the Silla Kingdom, and to examine, within that context, when and how farming tools spread from the Gyeongju area to its surrounding regions.
In Silla, iron farming tools went through three major stages of diachronic change: Stage I is characterized by the overall establishment of the organization system of Silla iron farming tools and is highlighted by the appearance of new farming tools such as iron rakes, iron shovel blades, and iron hoes. Stage II consists of two steps: Step II-1 is characterized by the reduction of weederplows buried along with the deceased, and the appearance of a new farming tool called the Sal-po. Step II-2 witnessed the biggest quantitative expansion of iron farming tools, which had only been excavated in small amounts in the previous time period, and the greatest diversity comprising all forms of iron farming tools, with the active burial of almost every kind of iron farming tool along with the deceased. Finally, Stage III saw a reduction in the kinds and forms of iron farming tools.
Those temporal changes were accompanied by changes in spatial distribution. As for the spatial characteristics of each kind of iron farming tool,the Gyeongju area was superior to other areas in terms of certain elements,especially iron rakes, iron shovel blades, and Mokbyeong-style(木柄形) Sal-po.
The distribution patterns of those farming tools varied according to time: they formed a set pattern around Gyeongju in the middle and late 4th century and were distributed in some strategic points of transportation. In the former half of the 5th century, their spread happened in full scale around Gyeongju, and their distribution became wide and broad in the area east of the Nakdong River. In the middle 5th century, there was no more spatial expansion, but a secondary internal spread took place in the surrounding areas and sub-settlements of each point. Those patterns of spread can be seen to demonstrate some aspects regarding the supply and maintenance of iron farming tools.
