In this paper, how forgiveness is embodied was examined focusing on the novels dealing with the Vietnam War as their material. For the study, Oh Hyeon-mi's 󰡔Red Ao Dai󰡕 and Chapter 4 of Kim Yong-seong's 󰡔The Mask of Memories󰡕 were selected and analyzed. Recently, it was reported that Korean government was adjudged that it should compensate for the civilian victims massacred during the Vietnam War. It was the first war that Korea participated in by dispatching combat units overseas. At that time, 340 thousand individuals in total were mobilized in the war, and about 5 thousand were killed. A war destroys and takes away many things. The Vietnam War is over, yet still remains unfinished as an ongoing war to those left.
In Chapter 2, transcendental forgiveness was investigated as the action of love and reconciliation in Oh Hyeon-mi's 󰡔Red Ao Dai󰡕. In this work with the material of Lai Daihan, a daughter's action of forgiving her Korean father is embodied in the aspect of transcendental forgiveness. ‘Tanhong’, who has grown up while being discriminated as ‘Lai Daihan’ in the society for a long time, comes to find her father and becomes reconciled with his family following her mother's dying wish, and in this process, she makes forgiveness possible with true love and reconciliation.
In Chapter 3, unconditional forgiveness was studied as the action of repentance and guilty conscience in Chapter 4 of Kim Yong-seong's 󰡔The Mask of Memories󰡕. ‘Jin-seong’ in the novel recalls the civilian massacre he witnessed when he was participating in the Vietnam War and that he left a baby, who had lost its parents in a battle and become left alone, into the care of a Vietnamese cathedral. Then he is told that the infant has become a nun and is wondering her birth, and sets off for Vietnam in order to repent his past actions. This journey of Jin-seong to Vietnam is embodied as an action of unconditional forgiveness in the literary work.
