〈Abstract〉The main Purpose of this article is to observe the story and plot of the play, Antony and Cleopatra, giving a full consideration to the conspicuous features of the main characters of the play, and analyzing throughly the characteristics of the protagonists ,in Paticular, Antony Cleopatra and Octavius Caesar In fact, the leading protagonists are possibly Antony and Cleopaura as they are playing main roles in the Play, whereas Octavius is in minor role. Octavius, however. has an important position in Politics as well as family relations in the Roman society of the time.In this essay much emphasis is given to the differences between the actual historical background of the Roman Period and the fictional dramatic content of the Play: for the content "of the play is much modified with fictional additions by Shakespeare. The main outstanding differences between Antony's and Octavius's disposition are that Antony's double-mindedness in seeking final ultimate coals in life is to have power in Rome and to have a romantic love affair with Cleopatra in Egypt, and that the sin91e-minded Octavius is only seeking the complete command of power in Rome. Octavius. therefore, behaves only as a leading Politician of cold, calculating determination.Cleopatra as a woman. unlikely as a queen, behaves only like an ordinary woman who displays general attributes of womanly characteristics such as jealousy, strong possessiveness, Ivstful Pleasure as well as coyness. Realistically speaking, actllally in the final scene Octavius becomes the military victor, defeating the allied forces of Antony and Cleopatra, so that they commit suicide, but in some sense it can be said that Octavius is an actual losers, not victor, as his ultimate purpose to return to Rome in triumph, capturing Cleopatra as prisoner is not realized. However calculating Octavius is,he cannot avoid being defied by Cleopatra who finally takes her own life, dignified gloriously in Royal robe in triumph on bed in her monument chamber by Antony's dead body.In this context it goes without saying that Cleopatra is more calculating for her decided coal than Ovtavius himself.Antony is a sort of flamboyant, debaucherous, hot-tempered, revelling, temperamental, reckless, physically well-developed warrior of generous mind. But he is full of something sepecial,of humanity which Cleopatra also has This particular feature of personality is in common between Antony and Cleopatra : it cannot be found in the character of Octavius as he is never sidetracked from consistent routine of living as a military commander and politician.
