皇城新聞에 관한 考察 = A Study on Hwangsung Shinmun

Towards the end of the Chosun dynasty, Chosun(Yi-dynasty) had been under the consistant threats from the Western Imperialist nations. To pretect the national rights and existence from those forces, there had been an extensive political and soical operations, such as partiotic educational movement while, the other hadn, there had been forceful resistance by the righteous arimy by the Chosun poeple. Amongst these various patriotic movements, the mass communication, specially in press field, the newspapaers as Dongip shinmun, Hwangsung shinmun, Jekuk shinmun and Daihan Maeil Shinmun performed a fole which is needed scholar's close attentions. These national newspapers which each possessed its own specific chafacteristics had exposed true intentions of the invasion of foreign forces including Japan, criticized the incompetent government and done their best to enlighten and edificate the people.
Among these newspapers, there had been comparatively lafge quantity of studies for the Dongnip shinmun along withe the study on the Committee for the Independence (Dongnip Hyphui). However, there are almost none for the rest of the papers. Expeically, Hwangsung shinmun carried out an important role as a bulletin for the Committee for the Independence together with Dongnip shinmun : and it had lasted about 12 years till the Chosun and Japan annexation. It had took over the tradition of the Dongnip shinmun which had ceased to be published by that time.
Considering the Hwangsung shinmun which had lasted longer than any other papers and also had largest circulations, is relatively important as a source material for the studies of Korean Modern history, there has been no full-scale studies for the paper.
I am presenting this article, therefore, to make people to realize the importance of the Hwangsung shinmun and at the same time to grasp the actual conditions for the field of mass communication in Chosun in those period.
Briefly, to introduce the content of the article here : First, I have been look through the process of the founding the newspapers, and the purpose of thepublications. There were two previous newspapers before the Hwangsung shinmun : one is Kyungsung shinmun which published on the 2nd fo March in 1898 adn the other is Daihan Hwangsung shinmun which was published on the 6th of April in 1898. As a successor of these two papers, Hwangsung shinmun was first publised on the 5th of September in the same year.
Second, I have dealt with the structure of the column and inscription style : external structure of the column consists of an editorial, official news, miscellanesous news, foreign papers and advertisement. I here analyzed its three times of transformation in content and whole structure. It had used mixed inscriptions of Korean and ancient Chinese letters. I conceived the significance of those mixed use of inscriptions.
Third, I studied a general condition of management inside the press company and also the role which the price fo the each paper played in the company. Particularly, when the readers did not pay the price in time, the company had confronted a very serious difficulaties in its management: for example, as a result of this, the paper had to be suspended twice: adn the company had to urge the payment to readers. I, here in this article, have analyzed its real situations.
Though, there are still a number of aspects to need one's attentions concerning the Hwangsung shinmun, I content myself at this stage with above three aspects as a basic sutdy for the future.
I hope this paper will contribute a little for the further sutdies on Hwangsung shinmun and other newspapers.
