한국사회에서 저항의 고조기의 정체성 정치의 특성 = 1970~1980년대 저항정체성 담론과 광주항쟁

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 한국에서 1960년대 이래 최대의 대중적 저항행동이었던 1980년 광주항쟁에서 표출된 집단적 정체성이, 1970~1980년대 저항운동의 정체성 담론의 역사 속에서 어떤 독특한 특성을 보여주는지를 고찰했다. 이를 위해 1970년대 초반부터 1987년 6월 항쟁 이전까지 시기의 중요한 정치적 사건들에 직접적 영향을 미쳤던 20개의 텍스트, 그리고 1980년 광주항쟁 당시 국가권력과 항쟁주체들이 주고받은 총 67개의 전단지ㆍ유인물ㆍ선언문ㆍ집회연설문 등을 분석했다. 1970~1980년대 저항운동의 정체성 담론에서는 민주ㆍ민중ㆍ민족을 핵심어로 하는 다중적 정체성과 그에 상응하는 적대적 정체성들이 대체로 등가적 지위를 부여받는 담론구조가 상당히 일관되게 지속되고 있었다. 이에 비해 광주항쟁에선 ‘민주’과 ‘애국’이 정체성 담론의 중심적 응축상징 역할을 하면서, 한편으론 보편성을 획득하기 위한 헤게모니 담론의 기능을, 다른 한편으론 계급적ㆍ영토적 정체성을 표현하는 언어적 형식으로서 기능을 수행했다. 광주항쟁이라는 저항의 고조기에 격렬히 충돌했던 권위주의 국가권력과 저항적 시민사회 세력은 공통적으로 ‘국민’(‘시민’)과 ‘애국’을 각자의 방식으로 정의내리는 일에 몰두하고 있었고, 각각 반공권위주의와 민주공화주의에 입각하여 나라공동체의 구성원과 적을 규정함을 통해 스스로를 정당화하고 상대를 탈정당화하는 담론투쟁을 전개했다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article focuses on the uniqueness of the collective identities constituted in the civic uprising in Gwangju 1980 in comparison to the structural features of the identity discourses of South Korean protest movements from the early 1970s to the late 1980s. For this purpose this study analyzed 20 texts which made a particular impact upon the significant political events in the 1970s and the 1980s, and 67 texts which were spread by the government, the military, and protest participants during the Gwangju uprising. In the protest movements of the 1970s and the 1980s, a discursive structure in which the democratic, popular, and nationalist symbols possessed relative equivalent positions continued with considerable consistency. In the Gwangju uprising, to the contrary, the ‘democratic-patriotic’ discourses played a central role, performing a function of claiming the universal legitimacy of the protest actions and of providing the linguistic form for expressing the class-based and territorial identities. In the Gwangju uprising, which was the most intense peak event within the protest cycles from the early 1960s to the late 1980s, both the authoritarian state and the resistant civil society endeavored to legitimate themselves and delegitimate their respective opponents by way of defining what is ‘patriotic’ and who are the ‘citizens’ of the nation, and of demarcating the boundaries between members and enemies of the nation in their own ways.
