동물 철학이란 무엇인가?: 슈바이처의 ‘생명에 대한 외경’을 중심으로 = What is Animal Philosophy?: Focusing on Albert Schweitzer’s “On the Reverence of Life”

Before leaving for Africa, Schweitzer wrote The Quest of the Historical Jesus (1913), which is considered one of the most influential theological works of the 20th century. In the book, Schweitzer meticulously analyzed over 600 books on the life of Jesus published between 1778 and 1901, making it a significant contribution to the study of the historical Jesus. Additionally, through his works on cultural philosophy such as The Decay and the Restoration of Civilization (1923) and Culture and Ethics (1923), Schweitzer analyzed the Western-centric worldview that formed the foundation of European thought before and after World War I, and clearly presented an alternative to it. The purpose of this article aims to highlight the key ideas of Schweitzer’s philosophy of “reverence for life”, focusing on two of his works, Out of My Life and Thought (1931) and Culture and Ethics (1923). Additionally, we intend to present a critique of culture based on Schweitzer’s philosophy of life and to propose an alternative strategy. Based on these discussions, we intend to provide an explanation for the recently emerged core issue in our society, “What is animal philosophy?” In particular, drawing upon Schweitzer’s perspective, the author aims to clearly present the relationship between animal philosophy and the philosophy of life, as well as the issue of the status of animals based on the philosophy of life from philosophical and Christian perspectives. Finally, we intend to reflect upon the contemporary significance of Schweitzer's philosophy of life as a conclusion.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

슈바이처가 아프리카로 떠나기 전에 쓴 『예수의 생애 연구사』(1913)는 1778년~1901년 사이에 출판된 예수 생애에 관한 대부분의 책인 600여 권을 정교하게 분석한 것으로서 20세기에 출간된 신학사 중 가장 영향력 있는 책으로 평가받고 있다. 그리고 슈바이처는 문화철학 저서인 『문화의 몰락과 재건』(1923), 『문화와 윤리』(1923)를 통해 1차 세계대전 전후의 유럽 중심의 서양 사상의 토대가된 세계관을 분석하고, 그 대안을 명료하게 제시하였다. 필자는 본논문에서 슈바이처의 핵심 사상이 잘 드러나고 있는 『나의 생애와사상』(1931)과 『문화와 윤리』(1923) 두 권을 중심으로 ‘생명에 대한경외’ 사상의 핵심 부분을 드러내고자 한다. 또한, 슈바이처의 생명사상을 토대로 문화비판의 전략과 대안을 드러내고자 한다. 이러한논의를 근거로, 필자는 최근 우리 사회의 핵심 이슈로 등장한 ‘동물철학이란 무엇인가?’에 대해 해명하고자 한다. 특히 슈바이처의 관점에 기대어 동물철학과 생명 사상의 관계, 생명 사상에 근거한 동물의위상 문제를 철학적 관점, 기독교적 관점에서 명료하게 제시하고자한다. 마지막으로 슈바이처의 생명 사상의 오늘날 의미를 되새겨 보면서 마무리하고자 한다.
