To compare recurrence rates and pregnancy rates of patients with borderline ovarian tumors who underwent unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy with those of patients who underwent cystectomy. We collected data through retrospective study in Ewha Womans University MokDong Hospital from 1993 to 2013. All 70 patients were underwent a bilateral salpingo-oophorectom y (n=22), unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (n=38) and cystectomy (n=10). The patients who wanted to preserve ovary for fertility and the margin of borderline tumor was intact by frozen section were received cystectomy only. The recurrence was only detected in the cystectomy group (n=2, 20%). Disease-free interval was shortened in the cystectomy group (13.2 mon) compared with unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy group (34.3 mon) and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy group (36.3mon) because cystectomy was done from 2008 and increased more recently. Pregnancy rate was no difference between cystectomy group (10%) and unilateral salpingo- oophorectomy group (10.5%). Time to pregnancy in cystectomy group (3 mon) was faster than unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy group (21.5 mon). Our results support that for women who are treated conservatively, close follow-up is important. Fertility outcome was no significant difference between cystectomy group and oophorectomy group.
