The study examined the effects of watching a film on viewers' affective states and cognitive judgment. The three film genres (action, comedy, tragedy) were chosen. For neutral condition, hedonically neutral and less arousing documentary films were selected. After watching one experimental film that was edited down to about 45 minutes, current mood state and satisfaction toward the film were assessed. Participants were then asked to estimate overall life satisfaction and their performance on the four different simple tasks (motor, mental, social and chance skills tasks). The results show that movie genre significantly affects both current mood state and satisfaction of a film, and gender is a relatively important predictor for moods and satisfaction of a film. Furthermore, the results show that affective state and gender have important roles on the estimation of self-performance on a variety of tasks.
