Rethinking of the Japanese Family : "Winter Sonata" as a filter

"Winter Sonata" a Korean TV drama, became a big social phenomenon in Japan in early 2000s. This paper outlines the popularity of the drama in Japan and investigates the reason for its the popularity by using existing data and an email survey. It was found out that strong supporters for the drama were middle aged women and that they felt nostalgic for human relationships, including relationships among family members, in the drama. "Winter Sonata" reminded us of how much the Japanese family has changed and what we have lost in the process of becoming an affluent country.
