한국 청년세대 종교적 현실과 세계청년대회(WYD)의 기대 효과 = The Religious Reality of Korean Youth and the Expected Effects of World Youth Day

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 2027년 한국에서 개최될 세계청년대회(World Youth Day, 이하 WYD)를중심으로 한국 사회와 교회의 청년세대를 진단하고, 이 행사가 가져올 종교적·사회적 기대효과를 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 현재 한국 사회는 초고령화의 가속과 1인 가구의 급증, 인구 감소로 인한 ‘축소사회’로의 이행 등 급격한 구조적 변화를 겪고 있다. 이러한 변화는 공동체성의 약화를 초래하고, 개인주의적 문화 속에서 청년들이 사회·경제· 문화 전반의 다중 압력을 받는 결과를 낳고 있다. 그 결과 청년세대는 탈근대적 개인주의와 상대주의, 그리고 소비자본주의의 물질적 환원주의와 실용주의 속에서 주체성과 자아의 진정성을 표현하려는 경향을 보인다.
종교적 차원에서 청년들의 종교성은 단일한 형태로 규정되기 어렵다. 실천적 무신론에기반한 내면적 위안과 치유의 추구, 공동체 안에서의 사회적 관계 형성, 그리고 전인적완성을 향한 지향 등 다양한 스펙트럼으로 나타난다. 이러한 맥락 속에서 WYD는 단순히 가톨릭 청년들만을 위한 종교행사가 아니라, 청년세대의 실존적 성장을 촉진하고 한국 사회 전체에 긍정적 파급효과를 미칠 것으로 기대된다. 본 연구는 WYD의 종교적 기대효과를 세 가지 비전으로 제시한다. 첫째, 청년들의 경험자본의 확장, 둘째, 종교성의재고와 신앙의 쇄신, 셋째, 환대하는 청년교회 비전의 제시이다. 궁극적으로 WYD 2027 은 한국의 경제적·문화적 발전을 넘어 사회 전반의 종교적 쇄신과 인간적 성숙을 촉진하는 계기가 될 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study aims to analyze the young generation of Korean society and the Catholic Church in relation to the World Youth Day (WYD) to be held in Korea in 2027, and to explore its expected religious and social effects. Korean society is currently undergoing rapid structural transformation, characterized by a super-aging population, the proliferation of single-person households, and a demographic shift toward a “shrinking society.” These transitions have weakened social cohesion and intensified multiple pressures on young people within an individualistic culture. As a result, the younger generation seeks to assert subjectivity and authenticity through postmodern individualism, relativism, and the material reductionism and pragmatism inherent in consumer capitalism.
In terms of religiosity, Korean youth demonstrate diverse spiritual orientations rather than a singular pattern. Many pursue inner comfort and healing rooted in practical atheism, while others seek community-based social connectedness or aim for holistic self-realization. Within this sociocultural context, WYD is expected to transcend its role as a Catholic youth event, contributing positively to the existential growth of young people and exerting broader influence on Korean society. This study identifies three key visions of WYD’s potential impact: (1) the expansion of youth experiential capital, (2) the renewal and reexamination of religiosity and faith, and (3) the formation of a welcoming and inclusive youth Church. Ultimately, WYD 2027 is anticipated to provide not only religious inspiration but also opportunities for spiritual renewal and human development across Korean society.
