Kim Dong Hwa is critical of the fact that Korean Buddhism is currently integrated into a single sect, the Jogye-Order. This thesis examines the grounds of his criticism, his suggestions concerning the alternative, and thus how he understands the identity of Korean Buddhism. Kim Dong Hwa believes that Korean Buddhism should be divided into three parts at the least: Scholastic-Buddhism, Zen-Buddhism, and Yeum-Buddhism. However, he insists on ‘comprehensive Buddhism’ which seeks integration into Scholastic-Buddhism when it comes to instruction. While Chinese Buddhism has traditionally been sectarian Buddhism which conducts systematization of Buddhist sects, Korean Buddhism has claimed harmonization Buddhism which has one penetrating principle in Buddhist instruction since Won Hyo. Kim Dong Hwa explains this principle of harmonization as One-Mind which is the basic principle of life and all the things in the universe, and emphasizes that One-Mind is the gist of Buddha`s enlightenment along with the fact that Mahayana Buddhism is what inherits and develops the core thoughts of Buddha. This thesis proposes ‘the identity of Korean Buddhist philosophy’ through sympathetically summarizing Kim Dong Hwa`s Buddhist philosophy as ‘the philosophy of One-Mind and harmonization.’
