트라우마, 공감, 주체성: 레씽의『황금색 공책』연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 트라우마와 공감 두 개념에 대한 최근의 이론적 탐색들을 기반으로 삼아 도리스 레씽의 대표작 <황금색 공책>의 의미작용과 기법상의 의의를 살펴보려는 시도이다. 먼저, 트라우마 서사로서 이 소설은 메타픽션적 구성과 내용을 통해 1950년 대 냉전기 영국과 미국의 현실에 관한 총체적인 탐구를 수행한다. 공산주의 이념의 붕괴와 문학의 상업화, 젠더 억압의 지속과 식민주의 과거의 상흔 등 작가 주인공의 트라우마는 어느 한 가지 원인으로 환원할 수 없는 복합적인 성격을 띤다. 사적인 동시에 공적인 트라우마의 여러 요인들을 탐사하는 과정에서 레씽은 주인공의 트라우마 증상이 현실의 진실한 증언자로서 작가의 숙명임을 환기하는 동시에 트라우마를 돌파하려는 노력이 문학적 앎과 상통함을 보여준다.
트라우마와 더불어, 공감은 정동이론의 부상과 뇌신경과학의 성과들을 바탕으로 최근 학제적인 조명을 받아왔다. 본 연구는 공감 개념의 역사에서 sympathy를 비롯하여 유사 개념들을 검토하고 정동으로서 공감 개념이 문학 텍스트의 맥락에서 어떤 의미를 지니는지 살펴본다. 공감의 서사적 성격에 특히 초점을 맞춰 작가-서술자-주인공-독자의 관계로 이뤄지는 서사적 상호작용에서 공감이 본원적인 기제라는 점과 공감의 사회적 정치적 함의를 분석하고 공감의 서사성과 관련된 이러한 측면들을 <황금색 공책>의 실험적 요소들과 연계하여 살펴보고자 한다.

This research is an attempt to understand recent theoretical developments of trauma and empathy, deploying the concepts to interpret textual workings of Doris Lessing’s The Golden Notebook in more nuanced ways. This novel delves into the truths of life in the 1950s Britain and United States, embodying social realities, in resolutely, if ironically, holistic manner, in the age every facet of life seems to evidence the total fragmentation of reality. Anna’s trauma reveals its composite nature as it involves debunked communist beliefs, commercialization of literature, persistence of sexual oppression, repressed memories of colonialism, among others. Examining those varied dimensions of trauma, which is personal and public at the same time, Lessing suggests that Anna is destined to live a traumatized life insomuch as she wants to be a writer as a true witness of her world. Further, she touches on the overlapping between literary knowledge and the perceptive potential of traumatic working-through. Along with trauma, empathy attracted critical attention from diverse disciplines, especially affect studies and neuroscience, in recent years.
