The urban development paradigm has shifted from a modern approach, focusing on growth-oriented policy to a post-modern approach, stressing quality of life. This shift has given urban transportation problems, which have long had an impact on the quality of human life, a new prominence in urban development. This paper analyzes the characteristics of urban transportation through a comparative study and hypothesis testing, and it suggests implications. The hypotheses were set based on three variables: accessibility of urban transportation, satisfaction with public transportation, and the human friendliness of the road. After conducting the test, the results show that the three hypotheses, that the post-modern city ranks higher than the modern city in each of the three variables, cannot be supported. These findings run counter to the general notion of the superiority of post-modern urban development theory, and the study has many implications for the urban development of Korea in the future.
