This study examines how martial law news broadcast around 10 PM on December 3, 2024, spread among university students and identifies factors related to news-sharing behavior. To this end, a survey was conducted the following morning with 150 university students at two universities in Seoul. Survey questions included the time, place, and channel of first news awareness; the number of times the news was shared with family/friends/online channels, news sharing motivations, and political efficacy. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and negative binomial regression analysis for count variables. Results showed that over half of respondents first encountered the news at home within one hour of the incident occurring. The primary channels for first awareness were acquaintances, social media, and internet news, in that order. University students most frequently shared news with friends, followed by family and unspecified online audiences. The effects of gender, time/location/channel of first news awareness, news sharing motivation, and political efficacy on news sharing frequency varied depending on the communication receiver. This study has limitations in generalizing its findings due to the analysis of a restricted sample obtained through a cross-sectional survey of students at a specific university. It was exempt from IRB review as no personally identifiable information was collected or recorded, and no follow-up interviews were conducted.
