The research, through developing and implementing a program to delay children's gratification, investigated and analyzed its effect on development of children's capacity to delay their gratification and internal and external control beliefs, ultimately to understand and check if the program is an appropriate educational activity to help children to develop their capacity to delay gratification.
The target of this research were 42 children at the age of 5 in the nursery "S" at Jeonju in Jeonlabuk-do. Those children were divided into the experimental group (n=21) and the controlled group (n=21) and the program for delay of gratification was implemented only to the experimental group.
As a research tool, we used a)Kim, Hyesoon's rating criteria for children's capacity to delay gratification(2003), which was an adapted version of Olson and Kashiwari's(2000), b)Park, Sunmi's tool for children's internal-external control beliefs(1988), which was translated and supplemented version of Mishcel, Zeiss and Zeiss's(1974), and c)Feire, Goreman and Wessman's tool to investigate delay of gratification of children's needs. The t-test and Analysis of Covariance (ANOVA) were conducted on the collected data, using the SPSS 12.0 (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences 12.0) program.
The results of this study are as follows.
First, the delay of gratification of the children with the experience of the program for delay of gratification was more improved than that of unexperienced children
Second, internal control beliefs of the children with the experience of the program for delay of gratification were more improved than that of unexperienced children.
Third, there was no statistically significant difference in the interaction effect according to the children's sex, on capacity to delay gratification and internal-external control beliefs through the program for delay of gratification.
Finally, based on the above results, we have learned that the program for delay of gratification made a positive effect on the children's change in their capacity to delay gratification and also their internal-external control beliefs.
