문화번역의 장으로서의『시사영어연구(時事英語硏究)』연구 = A Study on The Study of Current English

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper examines the productivity of a cultural study on an English-study-aid monthly magazine The Study of Current English by opening up the feasibility of positioning the magazine in the flux of cultural translations performed in the 1950s and 60s Korean society. Since the period is characterized by the replacement of Japanese by English as the first foreign language, most studies on cultural translations focus on analyzing major cultural magazines that carried translated English writings as their major articles. The Study of Current English, however, has never brought any serious attention from any researcher of cultural translations, even though it also contains ample evidences of cultural translations guided and shaped by the same zeitgeist of modernization, Enlightenment, cold war politics, etc. as that of the other major cultural magazines like Sasanggye. Analyzing the editorial structure, writers, writings, and readership of the magazine, this paper illuminates the cultural translation processes happened in and around the magazine by confirming the existence or germination of new hybrid discourses like ``examination nglish,`` ``current English,`` and Korean-English double orthography system.
