This paper is an attempt to provide a synthetic alternative to the long-lasting debate regarding the role of campaign. The mainstream scholars claim that the major role of campaign is activating party identification as an ultimate voting determinant. The revisionists challenge the perspective of activating campaign by providing a variety of aggregate level evidences showing the correspondence of election outcome to presidential party's performance. The hypothesis of asymmetric activation proposed here does not dispute with the mainstream view. At the same time, however, it has no quarrel with the responsiveness of election result to objective electoral environment proven by the revisionists. What I suggest in this paper is that the major role of campaign is activating party identification, but the extent of activation is dependent on objective electoral conditions. In addition, it is also proposed that party ambivalence, by moderating the role of party identification as a prior, functions as the underlying factor of deactivation. Utilizing multinomial logit estimation and the 1980 NES Major Panel Study, I attempt to provide a more comprehensive picture of the dynamics of voting decisions over an election year than past studies.
