국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 목적은 작가의 창작의도에 따라, 뮤지컬 <명성황후> 속의 주인공인 황후와 배경에서 창출하는 예술미의 정체는 어떤 것이며, 또 이 미감을 통해 황후의 조국애의 배경이 무엇인지를 알아보려 하였다. 연구방법으로 정신적인 측면의 미적범주는 철학에 속하여 진과 선과 미를 탐구하는 미학과 논리학으로 접근하였다. 이러한 미학의 미적범주는 숭고미, 우아미, 희극미, 비극미로 논리학은 작가의 창작의도와 작품분석으로 표출하였다. 명성황후는 1866년 왕비로 발탁되어 1895년 비장한 최후를 맞기까지 근 30년간 궁중대소사나 쇄국주의적 조선의 문호를 개방하는 등 조선 근대화에 전력을 쏟았다. 또 고종황제를 도와 개혁정치를 통해 나라를 발전시키기 위하여 노력을 하였지만 나라의 자존심으로 쇄국을 지켜오던 흥선대원군과 불화로 국정의 불안감을 전하여 명성황후에 대한 평가는 아직도 긍정적 또는 부정적 평가가 대립을 되고 있다. 본 연구의 결과로 뮤지컬 <명성황후>는 신비로운 정열이나 종교적인 중압감을 주면서 이성의 위대성을 자각하게도 하는 숭고미를 집중적으로 창출한다. 이 숭고미의 배경은 주로 폐쇄된 문호를 개방하여 문화나 문명 면에서 봉건적 규제나 폐습을 혁파하여 조국을 근대화하자는 긍정적 평가로 황후의 조국애에 기인하는데 이것을 조국애로 보아 명성황후는 조선의 근대화를 시작한 높은 선각으로 기리 추앙되어야 하겠다. 이러한 뮤지컬 <명성황후>는 방대한 역사적 사실을 갖고 있지만 공연이라는 형식으로 작가의 의도된 부분을 강조하여 연출이 되었기 때문에 명성황후에 대한 구체적이고 심도 있는 내용을 본 연구에서 다루기는 어렵다. 하지만 세계 속으로 흥행하는 뮤지컬 <명성황후> 속에 내포되어있는 미의식과 역사적 사실을 공연을 관람하는 객관에게 전달되어 느끼게 하는 효과는 어떠한 것보다 크다고 예상되어 본 연구는 이것을 분석하여 제시하였는데 보훈에 큰 의미가 있다고 사료된다.
