Language and culture have been integrated and inseparably related to each other. So, we should learn not only language but also the culture of the society where it is spoken to communicate with foreigners successfully and fluently.
Especially, it is very important to learn culture through English textbooks as one of the essential parts of English education as we have learned English in EFL situation of Korea. Therefore, I analyzed cultural contents in the 9th revised National Curriculum textbooks for the third grade students in middle school.
The results from this study are as follows:
First, the 13th topic such as art and literature showed the highest ratio of 12.75% among 19 topics in the revised National Curriculum for English education released in 2009 . But there were no contents of the 17th topic such as patriotism, peace and reunification.
Second, there were various cultural contents in the revised textbooks. It is considered very helpful in increasing students' motivation and interest in English to learn and understand various cultures.
Third, 13 textbooks of 14 included cultural contents in the supplementary 'culture tips' section. But some of the textbooks included just questions and asked students to search the culture for themselves on the internet. They showed the lack of cultural contents and it is necessary to make up for better and more interested culture tips to motivate students.
Fourth, the result from study of culture types showed 27.27% of material culture, 32.72% of behavioral culture and 40.00% of spiritual culture which takes top of the rank.
In conclusion, this study suggests that language and culture should be integrated and taught together in teaching students English and that culture contents of textbooks be developed systematically based on the national policy. Also, it is necessary that teachers realize the importance of culture education, get training courses about culture education and explore various culture contents for culture education.
