The Gigonggak (紀功閣) was a Hall of Meritorious Subjects (Gongsingak, 功臣閣) established within the Office of Loyal Merits (Chunghunbu, 忠勳府) during the reign of King Sukjong. Although a Gongsingak known as Jangsaengjeon (長生殿) had existed in the early Joseon period, it was abolished during King Taejong’s reign, and the later construction of Gigonggak succeeded that tradition. Historically, the essential character and function of a Gongsingak lay in serving as the repository for portraits of meritorious retainers (gongshin-hwasang, 功臣畫像). Accordingly, in 1750, the Album of Portraits of the Yangmu Meritorious Subjects was enshrined in Gigonggak, and the hall came to be recognized in later periods as a site dedicated to such portraits.
However, in truth, the original character and primary function of Gigonggak were not as a depository for meritorious portraits. From its inception, the hall was built to commemorate former kings who had been posthumously enrolled as meritorious subjects, and the items enshrined there were all memorial objects for these kings. Until now, the only known artifact housed in Gigonggak was the Yangmu Meritorious Subjects portrait album. This study reconsiders the hall’s historical nature by uncovering and examining additional enshrined objects, thereby offering a new perspective on the function and identity of Gigonggak.
