국문 초록 (Abstract)

최근에 우리 정부는 오는 2022년까지 모든 고등학교에 학점제를 도입한다는 계획을 발표하였다. 이와 관련해서 이 연구에서는 1967년부터 1972년 사이에 영국에서 Lawrence Stenhouse가 주도한 인문학 교육과정 프로젝트에서 개발된 인문학 교육과정을 고찰한다. 먼저, 그 당시에 영국에서 어떠한 사회적 배경 아래 인문학 교육과정이 개발되었는지를 살펴보고 중등학교에서 보통교육의 한 측면으로 Stenhouse가 제안한 ‘사회교육’에 관하여 논의한다. 그리고 사회교육을 위한 인문학 교육과정을 내용, 내용 구성, 그리고 내용 선정의 측면에서 각각 상세히 논의한다. 이러한 논의를 바탕으로, 결론에서는 인문학 교육과정이 영국의 학교에서 시민교육에 기여한 바를 검토한 후에 고교학점제의 시행에 대비하여 중등학교에서 실행해야 하는 시민교육을 위한 사회과 교육과정 개발에 주는 의미를 살펴본다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Recently, the Ministry of Education has announced that all high schools would adopt a new course credit system by 2022. In relation to this educational policy, this paper investigated humanities curriculum developed by the Humanities Curriculum Project from 1967 to 1972 under the directorship of Lawrence Stenhouse sponsored by the Schools Council and the Nuffield Foundation in England. In this paper, I first explored social contexts of the humanities curriculum development. The concept of Stenhouse’s social education as an aspect of general education in secondary schools was then examined. I also investigated the humanities curriculum for social education in terms of its content, organization of its content, and selection of its content. I concluded the present paper by discussing implications of the humanities curriculum for the development of secondary school social studies curriculum in preparation for the new high school credit system.
