    The editorial room of newspaper company runs a series of experiments everyday. The main functions carried out by the editorial designers there are to separate, impose importance to, and provide readability to articles by manipulating their formatic properties such as location, size, shape, color, presence of illustation, existence of border, and so on. Many priciples of formatic arts are applied to this process, interacting with one another to determine the likelihood of an article to be read. The present study is to explore what formatic factors of a news article have significant effects on the likelihood of the article to be read earlier than others, by the data collection method called 'think-aloud,' and provide examples illustrating each finding. A total of 33 subjects participated in the study. They individually visited the laboratory equiped with a think-aloud station and provided verbal protocols, while reading the newspaper published earlier in the morning. The results produced by a generalized linear model clearly revealed what among the formatic factors were significant in affecting the likelihood of a news article to be read. Also provided was an illustrative discussion on each finding with actual newspaper pages on which the readers' scanpaths were drawn.
