국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 최근 각광받고 있는 사회연결망분석을 이용하여 우리나라 기업의 이사회연결망을 파악하고 경영자 보상과의 관계를 종합적으로 분석함으로써, 기업의 이사회연결망이 경영자 보상에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 위해, 사회연결망분석과 그 예를 소개하고 2008년도 KOSPI 50에 포함된 기업과 그 기업에 소속된 등기이사를 대상으로 학연을 기준으로 한 이사회연결망을 구축한 후, 기업의 재무적 특성변수와 경영자 특성변수를 차례로 통제한 상태에서 다변량회귀분석을 실시하였다. 분석결과, 이사회연결망변수는 중심성지표의 종류에 상관없이 경영자 보상과 대부분 유의적인 양(+)의 값을 가지는 것으로 나타나, 기업의 이사회연결망이 견고할수록 경영자 보상은 증가하는 동시에 경영자 보상을 설명함에 있어 이사회연결망변수가 중요한 역할을 수행하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다.

This paper investigates that social network of directors among the corporations affects CEO compensation. Social network analysis assumes that agents in a network are interconnected or exhibit some degree of dependence. Moreover, the links between agents are the channels by which information is communicated and this exchange of information produces an environment that produces opportunities for or constraints on individual actions. Using data on 319 registered directors who served on the boards of directors for KOSPI 50 firms in 2008, I map the social network of directors and calculate centrality indexes that account for each director's importance in the network. I find that, controlling for firm's financial and CEO characteristics, firms that have more connected board award their CEOs significantly higher compensation.
