Using nuclear energy poses the risk of exposure to radioactive substances during generation and after use. Therefore, the application of nuclear energy requires ongoing attention and effort concerning the disposal of radioactive waste. The leakage of disposed radioactive waste must be quickly detected because it leaks along the groundwater, thus requiring a detailed understanding of the hydrogeochemical characteristics of the groundwater in and around the radioactive waste disposal site. Accordingly, in this study, the continuous on-site survey on groundwater chemistry was conducted in a low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste disposal site in a coastal area of the southeastern part of South Korea to understand the hydrogeochemical characteristics and flow dynamics of the groundwater in that area.
From March 2015 to December 2021, groundwater samples (n = 839, from one well and at 44 sampling depths) were collected quarterly to evaluate temporal and spatial changes of groundwater chemistry. Groundwater sampling was conducted in wells located in Cretaceous granodiorite and sedimentary rocks, using two types of multilevel monitoring systems.
Groundwater samples are largely classified into seawater-mixed groundwater (Group 1) and natural groundwater (Group 2) using the hydrochemistry and calculated seawater fraction (Fsea). Group 1 shows higher EC, Eh (redox potential), and lower DO values, with high concentrations of most dissolved ions, reflecting the influence of seawater. The degree of seawater mixing varies depending on the distance from the coastline and the location at the fault boundary.
Five different hydrochemical types were further classified for a detailed understanding of groundwater types in the study area. Type 1 is identical to the above-classified Group 1. Type 1 wells consist of Na-Cl type groundwater, showing the highest Fsea (up to 79%) among all data. Ca-Cl type groundwater found in GM-1 series wells is classified as type 2. Cation exchange during seawater intrusion is a primary hydrochemical process of this type.
PCA was also conducted for groundwater wells excepting type 1 and type 2 to delineate the geochemical processes controlling the natural background groundwater. The hydrochemistry of natural groundwater is primarily controlled by silicate weathering in the area, and groundwater wells were classified into three groups. Type 3 is the Ca-HCO3 type, which shows higher calcium, magnesium, and manganese concentrations. Diluted samples with a low degree of water-rock interaction were categorized as type 4. Lastly, type 5 groundwater samples represent the highly evolved Na-HCO3 type samples that were formed due to plagioclase weathering. Type 5 groundwater shows high ionic concentrations of Na, SiO2, and HCO3 with increased pH, and occurs restrictedly in the sandstone area.
The groundwater system of the study area exhibits a reducing environment where ferrous and manganese iron is released. PCA results show that manganese, iron, and sulfate ions have an opposite trend to dissolved oxygen and Eh. Although sulfate reduction appears to be little pervasive, some degrees of sulfate reduction is observed in the SO4 vs δ34SSO4 plot. The coexistence of sulfate reduction and pyrite oxidation is suggested.
Oxygen and hydrogen isotopic analysis of water reveals seasonal variations in precipitation collected at different altitudes, with lighter values in spring and summer and heavier values in fall and winter. The O-H isotopic compositions of groundwater collected between 2019 and 2022 generally exhibit a consistent annual pattern, except for some samples (GM-4, GM-5, and GM-6), with notable isotopic enrichments in GM-5. Local meteoric water lines (LMWLs) during the wet and dry seasons were also established. Altitude effects of precipitation in the study area are defined as -0.31‰/100m for δ18O and -1.85‰/100m for δD. Using the derived altitude effect, the potential range of the recharge elevation for groundwater from different depths of each well could be evaluated. Accordingly, two distinct flow paths of groundwater were distinguished in the study area: regional flow and the local flow controlled by faults. The results of this study on groundwater flow system and hydrochemical characteristics will provide a more reasonable direction in predicting, evaluating, and managing potential radionuclide leakage from the disposal site.
