세계의 지리적 개념화와 인종적 시공간의 형성: 19세기 말 프랑스의 인종주의적 주체화 과정 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 19세기 말 프랑스의 인종주의적 주체화 과정을 고찰한다. 당시 프랑스에서 인종주의가 어떻게 현실의 구체적인 인간들에게 작용하여 세계에 대한, 타자에 대한 인식을 인종주의적인 방식으로 생산해 내었는지, 그리고 이러한 인식이 개인들의 인종 정체성 형성에 어떠한 영향을 주었는지를 역사적으로 추적해 보는 것이다. 서구 인종주의의 역사에서 19세기 후반기는 매우 중요한 시기이다. 인종주의가 개인들에게까지 확산되고, 민족주의, 제국주의 등과 결합하여 강력한 힘을 발휘하는 시기이다. 인종주의는 단순히 학자들의 이론이나 정부 정책의 차원에 머무르는 것이 아니라 개개인들의 현실 인식과 정체성에까지 영향을 미치게 된다. 서구인들은 인종적 우월감을 가지고 자신들이 비서구인들의 삶에 개입하는 행위를 지극히 당연한 것으로 여겼고, 더 나아가 ‘백인들의 사명’으로 믿기 시작하였다. 개인들의 인종주의적 세계관과 인종 정체성의 형성을 통해 인종주의는 현실의 이데올로기로서 작동할 수 있는 자신의 굳건한 토대를 가지게 된 것이다. 19세기 말 서구의 인종주의에 대해서는 많은 연구가 진행되었지만 기존의 연구들은 정치가, 이론가들의 인종주의적 담론의 분석에 치중하거나 당시 사회 속에서 벌어지는 인종주의적 사건의 조명에만 초점을 맞추고 있다. 인종주의가 현실의 개인들에게 어떻게 작용하였고, 그들의 인종주의적 세계관과 인종 정체성을 어떻게 만들어 내었는지에 대한 구체적인 연구는 아직까지 제시된 바가 없다. 실제로 인종주의가 사회 속에서 어떻게 확산되고 움직여나갔는지에 대해서는 무관심했던 것이다. 본 연구는 19세기 말 프랑스라는 구체적인 시공간 속에서 제국주의 이데올로기와 연계된 지리학의 주도로 ‘세계의 지리적 개념화’가 진행되고 그에 기반하여 ‘인종적 시공간’이라는 새로운 인식 체계가 사회 전반으로 확산되는 과정을 살펴본다. ‘인종적 시공간’이 사회문화 영역의 여러 기제들을 통해 각 개인들의 세계 인식에 영향을 주고 더 나아가 인종 정체성의 형성에까지 나아가는 인종주의적 주체화 과정을 고찰함으로써 현실 속에서 인종주의가 작동하는 실제적인 모습을 이해하는 것이 본 연구의 목적이다.

This study examines the racial subjection in late 19th century France, especially a historical process that the racism produced an awareness of the world, of the others, and that this awareness made a racial identity of frenchmen at that times. In late 19th century, the racism did not only remain in the theory of scholars or in the government's policy, but influenced an individual awareness and their identity. Europeans considered normal their racial superiority complex and to intervene in a life of non-europeans, had blind faith in 'white man's burden' that civilize unenlightened non-white people. The racial view of the world and the racial identity of individuals provided the racism with a firm base of power expansion. The studies of racism in late 19th century did concentrate just on the analysis of politic discours, or of case of racism. They were indifference to examine how the racism move and diffuse actually in the society. This study inquires a concrete process of geoconception of the world and a making of an public awareness of the racial spacetime in late 19th century France. The purpose of study is to understand a method of operation of the racism through a examination of the racial subjection.
