피타고라스 수비학의 활용 방안 연구 : 인물 분석과 타로 연계 활용을 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 고대 그리스 철학자 피타고라스(Pythagoras)의 사상에 기초한 수비학(Numerology)의 이론적 체계와 상징적 의미를 고찰하고, 현대 사회에서 자기 이해 및 성격 분석 도구로서 이를 활용할 수 있음을 제시하였다. 피타고라스 수비학은 “만물은 수數로 이루어져 있다”라는 철학적 전제에 기반하여, 인간 존재와 우주 질서를 수의 원리로 해석하려는 시도이다. 특히 개인의 이름과 생년월일을 일정한 규칙에 따라 숫자로 환산함으로써 성격·성향·인생 등의 방향성을 유추하고자 하는 방식은 동양의 사주명리학 또는 별자리 점성술과 유사한 상징 체계를 지닌다. 본 논문은 피타고라스 수비학의 역사적 기원과 철학적 기반을 살펴보았다. 이를 바탕으로 핵심 개념인 생명 경로 수(Life Path Number)·운명 수(Destiny Number)·영혼 욕구 수(Soul Urge Number)·성격 수(Personality Number) 등의 산출 방법과 의미를 고찰하였다. 이어서 각 숫자(1~9 및 마스터 넘버 11·22·33)의 상징성과 성격적 특성을 분석하고, 이를 현대 심리학의 성격 이론과 비교함으로써 수비학적 해석의 이론적 정합성과 실용성에 대해 고찰하였다.
본 연구는 특히 피타고라스 수비학만을 단독적으로 분석하는 데 그치지 않고, 세계 각지에서 발전한 주요 수비학과의 비교 분석도 시도하였다. 고대 메소포타미아 지역에서 유래한 칼데아 수비학(Chaldean Numerology), 유대 신비주의 전통에 기반한 카발라 수비학(Kabbalah Numerology), 동양 점성학 및 명리 체계를 반영한 중국 수비학, 베다 천문학과 결합한 인도 수비학(Vedic Numerology)들의 이론적 특징과 수의 체계, 해석 방식, 상징 구조 등을 분석하였고, 각 수비학 체계가 지닌 문화적·철학적 특성을 검토하였다. 또한 실존 인물 사례 분석을 통해 실제로 수비학이 개인의 자기 인식, 진로 선택, 대인관계에 미치는 영향과 활용 가능성을 논하였다. 이를 통해 피타고라스 수비학이 단순한 점술 체계를 넘어 하나의 상징 언어로서 자기 성찰과 심리적 통찰을 할 수 있는 하나의 해석 틀이 될 수 있음을 제시하였다. 나아가 타로와의 연계를 통해 해석 틀이 확장될 수 있음을 제시하였다. 이를 토대로 본 논문이 수비학 연구와 활용에 이바지할 수 있기를 기대한다.

This study examines the theoretical framework and symbolic significance of Numerology grounded in the philosophy of the ancient Greek thinker Pythagoras, proposing its utility as a tool for self-understanding and personality analysis in modern society. Based on the philosophical premise that “all things consist of numbers,” Pythagorean Numerology attempts to interpret human existence and cosmic order through the medium of numbers. In particular, the method of converting an individual's name and date of birth into numbers according to specific rules to infer personality, propensities, and life direction shares a symbolic system similar to Eastern Saju (Four Pillars of Destiny) or Western astrology.
This paper investigates the historical origins and philosophical foundations of Pythagorean Numerology. Based on this foundation, the calculation methods and meanings of core concepts such as the Life Path Number, Destiny Number, Soul Urge Number, and Personality Number were examined. Subsequently, the symbolism and personality traits of each number (1 through 9, as well as Master Numbers 11, 22, and 33) were analyzed. By comparing these with modern psychological personality theories, the study evaluates the theoretical coherence and practicality of numerological interpretation.
While focusing on Pythagorean Numerology, this study also reviews the general outlines of major numerological traditions that developed across different cultures. It provides a comparative overview of the theoretical characteristics, number systems, interpretation methods, and symbolic structures of Chaldean Numerology originating from ancient Mesopotamia, Kabbalah Numerology based on Jewish mystic traditions, Chinese Numerology reflecting Eastern astrology and divination systems, and Vedic Numerology combined with Vedic astronomy, examining the cultural and philosophical distinctiveness of each system.
Furthermore, through case studies of real individuals, the paper discusses the practical influence and applicability of numerology regarding self-awareness, career choices, and interpersonal relationships. Through this analysis, the study proposes that Pythagorean Numerology serves not merely as a divination system, but as a symbolic language and interpretive framework capable of facilitating self-reflection and psychological insight. Additionally, it suggests that this interpretive framework can be expanded through integration with Tarot. Based on these findings, this thesis is expected to contribute to the research and practical application of numerology.
